Frequently asked questions
1) WILL BROACHING ON LATHE OR CNC MILL DAMAGE MY MACHINE?
No. Not if you follow the recommended feeds/speeds/set-up info, Program your machine correctly and set-up our tool correctly. Our Patented Design has been in use for 11 years, previously sold through Razorform Tools, and thousands of machine shops are using our inserted key slotting tool with great results.
The older-style concept of broaching needs to shift to our broaching system. Our keyway cutter is designed for a shaving style of broaching which doesn’t have the same impact and shock that is associated with the older styles of broaching that take much deeper depths of cut. Keyseaters and shapers take deep depths of cut gouging large amounts of materials at slow speeds.
For a .001” DOC per pass with our product, you could push that through with your hand, but cycle times are good because the part doesn’t come off of the machine.
2) CAN I REGRIND YOUR KEYWAY BROACH INSERTS?
Yes! Please do. We do not offer a regrind service but many of our clients get multiple regrinds on each cutting edge.
3) HOW DO I USE THE NEW BROACHING SYSTEM ON MY CNC MILL OR LATHE?
Each job has many different factors such as material, quality of machine, and the willingness of the operator to try something new. Very experienced operators that know more about machining than we ever will sometimes struggle because they’ve reached the point in their career where they can’t learn anything new.
We send general guidelines in an email titled “Keys to Using CNC Broach Tools” that you perfect for the variables of your specific job and machinery.
Depending on the material being cut, general speeds and feeds for keyway slotting are .0005-.0015″ per pass at 250-550 IPM.
4) WHY CAN’T I BUY CNC BROACH TOOL KEYWAY BROACHES THROUGH DISTRIBUTORS?
The fact is you can! However, we must have a relationship with the end-user first as they are our client. Read the steps the distributor must go through to work with us here: https://cncbroachtools.com/contact-us/broach-tool-distributor/
5) WHO DO I CONTACT IF I HAVE A PROBLEM WITH CNC BROACH TOOLS?
We strongly encourage clients experiencing problems to call us at 877-248-1631 or contact us through the Contact Us page on this site.
We are very skilled at diagnosing and advising about the process of CNC Broaching over the phone. You should not be chipping corners on the keyway broach inserts but rather be getting a rounded glass-like wear. Chipping corners is an indication that something is not aligned correctly or is moving.
6) WILL CNC BROACH CALCULATE INSERT LIFE FOR OUR KEY SLOTTING OPERATION?
No. There are enough client testimonials for you to get a pretty good idea of what our product is capable of. Also, here are video testimonials sent to us from other machine shops just like you.
7) FOR YOUR BROACHING SYSTEM DOES I NEED A SPINDLE LOCK?
It is possible to lock the brake in the program. Contact your machine manufacturer or distributor to find out how to program lock your spindle brake.
99% of our clients do not have a physical spindle lock but rather lock the brake with the program. We provide free CNC Broaching Program Templates upon ordering that will help you as well.
8) CAN I “STEP-IT-OVER” AND CREATE A WIDER INTERNAL KEYWAY WITH YOUR BROACH TOOL?
Yes. This is very common. But check the Depth of the Keyway Radially (DKR), or what we call the Height of Groove dimension. Our inserts only stick up so high above the broach tool and larger internal keyways need to be deeper.
9) WHAT IF I DO NOT SEE THE WIDTH TOLERANCE I NEED ON YOUR BROACH INSERT CHART?
We can special grind the widths of both cutting edges down to different width tolerances. NOTE: this does grind the TiN coat off of the very sides which is mostly relief angle. The TiN coat is still along the whole face of the cutting edge. There is a minimum order and the special broach insert typically drop ship in 7 days. This time frame is only for grinding the width tolerances, not radius or spline shapes.
10) CAN I GET RADIUS, SPLINE SHAPES, OR OTHER FORMS ON CNC BROACH INSERTS?
YES! We now offer special grinds for splines, involute plane gear forms and radius. However these are NOT an off-the-shelf product like our standard internal keyway slotter. Each special grind form has an engineering charge, minimum order, and ships in 2-3 weeks.
11) DOES CNC BROACH TOOL LLC PROVIDE PROGRAMMING?
YES! CNC Broach Tool now offers lathe broaching and mill broaching templates. We do not customize these to your specific application. They are a guide only and by using it you indemnify CNC Broach of any liability relating to the use of the CNC Broaching program template. We also have our patent pending Broach Program Generator.
After we receive your PO and payment we will email you the template that matches your machine.
12) DOES CNC BROACH TOOL LLC PROVIDE A WARRANTY OR CAN I RETURN THE TOOL?
No. All Sales Are Final is included on all documents we send you.
How you use the key slotting tool is beyond our control. The variables are on your end as we take this off of the shelf. What happens to the broach tool after you receive it we do not know. But we have 2500 other clients using this same design of stock standard broach tool and they get a great result. The slotting tool design does not change from client to client. Maybe you missed a digit in programming and hit something? Maybe the insert got so dull it didn’t cut right? How do we know you were aligned right?
There are many possibilities why a machining process can go wrong and it’s always easiest just to blame the cutting tool. But the tool doesn’t change from client to client. The variables are on your end from the operator, programming, machine and set-up. We are always here to discuss and provide clues to solve problems, but we will not subsidize your learning curve.
13) DOES CNC BROACH TOOLS PROVIDE SAMPLE OR TESTER TOOLING FOR THEIR BROACHING SYSTEM?
No. Our product design and quality is proven by the numerous industry magazine articles and reviews about our inserted broaching tool along our client testimonials.
14) DOES CNC BROACH TOOLS OFFER A TOOL THAT WILL SQUARE CORNERS IN SQUARES?
We do not have a 90° stock corner insert at this time. We receive many requests for this but prefer to keep our product offerings limited so quality is high. You can not use our key slotting tool in a square as you can not reach the corner because the broach tool bar does not clear the cutting edge of the broach insert.
